We were all talking about communism, democracy, and socialism, which have all turned out to be very nice things, actually. And we were talking about them just as if it was a very joyous thing, and that's what I think that the atmosphere was. It was the period of the Peace Congress, of the demonstrations against the Munich Conference, it was the period of the end of Empire, the beginning of the Labour Government, which was the period of the Discovery of Television, the period of the Royal Opera House, the period of things which we now have taken for granted, like the Caribbean, and the ending of the Vietnam War. I think that the moment when all of this came together, of course, was the Summer of Love in 1967, when people began to say, 'Well, it is time to go back and talk about these things again, it's time to go back and talk about these things again,' and it was just the beginning of a general feeling that the whole thing had been a mistake, or at the very least it had been something of a waste. And it was the time when all of us, even the older generation, had seen the kind of things which we had talked about as teenagers when we were young, such as the fighting in the streets.
